Live By Night starring Ben Affleck – Review

Live By Night Poster

Ben Affleck returns to cinemas on the 13th January, not as Batman this time but as Joe Coughlin in the new dramatic thriller, Live By Night.

What you put out into this world will always come back to you, but it never comes back how you predict. Taking fatherly advice is not in Joe Coughlin’s (Ben Affleck) nature. Instead, the WWI vet is a self-proclaimed anti-establishment outlaw, despite being the son of the Boston Police Deputy Superintendent. Joe’s not all bad, though; in fact, he’s not really bad enough for the life he’s chosen.

Unlike the gangsters he refuses to work for, he has a sense of justice and an open heart, and both work against him, leaving him vulnerable time and again—in business and in love. Driven by a need to right the wrongs committed against him and those close to him, Joe heads down a risky path that goes against his upbringing and his own moral code. Leaving the cold Boston winter behind, he and his reckless crew turn up the heat in Tampa. And while revenge may taste sweeter than the molasses that infuses every drop of illegal rum he runs, Joe will learn that it comes at a price.

Live By Night – Great Visuals, Sets, Costumes and Cast

I have to say that when I first saw the trailer for the movie and knowing that Ben Affleck was directing the movie, I was excited. I love 2012’s Argo that Affleck directed and the feel that movie had, so I was looking forward to seeing if the same was brought to Live By Night and I was pleased to say it is.

At first glance of the movie the colouring is very nicely done, giving the movie a real feel of the 20s as do the sets and costumes for this period drama, the cast also brings the film to life with a great selection including Brendan Gleeson (Assassin’s Creed) and Scott Eastwood (Son of Clint Eastwood), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Elle Fanning (We Bought a Zoo).

Live By Night is an enjoyable movie that not only looks good, but runs nicely throughout the storyline, it’s nicely directed and the characters are believable. It’s certainly a movie you should check out, it’s a refreshing change.
