It’s time to head down the road from Blazing Minds HQ in the town of Rhyl with a review of the new British Comedy Me, Myself and Di with a great cast of British Comedy names and a film that was made in Rhyl, North Wales.
Back in 2019, I was honoured to get to chat with some of the production team about the film while they were filming in North Wales, so it’s great to be able to see the finished production.
Me, Myself and Di, began principal photography in North Wales back in 2019. The female-led comedy in the vein of Muriel’s Wedding and Bridesmaids is the latest production from the London-based outfit Three Wise Monkeys.
After winning the ‘trip of a lifetime’ to a caravan park in Rhyl, North Wales, unlucky in love Northerner, Janet Brown (Katy Clayton), is ready for a holiday romance. Unfortunately, taking the advice of her best friend, Diana (Lucy Pinder) – pretending to be the opposite of who she actually is in order to find love – doesn’t quite lead to the ‘happily ever after’ that Janet was hoping for.
Keeping it Rhyl!
It’s always strange to see somewhere you live near in a film, the last film I watched with Rhyl as the main location was Vinyl, so after all the years it’s great to see the town feature in another film and Me, Myself and Di certainly use many locations that locals or holidaymakers to the town will recognise.
The movie itself is certainly a slice of British comedy characters to the screen with a touch of the golden days of British cinema, there is plenty of moments that I found myself laughing out loud to as the journey from Bolton to Sunny Rhyl where romance may be on the cards for Janet, look out for a moment of My Fair Lady on the bus trip to North Wales.
Everything doesn’t seem to go to plan for Janet and Diana when they arrive at the holiday camp with the caravan not exactly being what they expected as Diana says, “It’s a bloody skip”, but Janet has a positive thought about it all and just wants to enjoy her prize holiday.
But after a while Janet’s holiday starts to be everything she has dreamed of but will everything go to plan, will she find the love she wants and will Diana get what she wants!
Classic Comedy
I have to say that the movie had the feel of those classic comedies for me, such as Holiday on the Buses with the comical moments of the holiday camp, with the likes of Chris Craven (James Lance) the mad-haired owner of the Craven Holiday Park. Anyone that has been to a low-budget holiday park will know the type of character I mean.
Katy Clayton shines as Janet Brown as she tries to find romance and her moments on screen work perfectly, Lucy Pinder is great as the complete opposite of Clayton’s character and the two work together brilliantly.
Me, Myself and Di is very nicely written by Samantha Lloyd, there is some brilliant play on words, and names, and the script brings the quirky characters to life brilliantly on the screen as the story unfolds the movie is not only fun to watch but it is also a delight to watch with the cinematography which looks great with its vibrant and crisp colours on scenes inside and outside. The camera work also gives Me, Myself and Di a nice feel with the depth of field used very well to bring the actors to the focal point.
Director Chris Green’s direction gives Me, Myself and Di a feeling of not only a passion and the fun of filming it but also it is also well-directed and he has brought out the onscreen presence of the actors.
Laugh out loud
It’s fantastic to see a good wholesome British-made comedy that has everything you could possibly want, the comedy, romance, heartache, delightful story and a holiday camp in Rhyl, the 93-minute running time flew by and it’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed a comedy so much, not only did I laugh loudly there are many moments that bring that smile to your face.
Me, Myself and Di is a quirky, comical and well-produced British comedy with a huge ensemble cast including James Lance (Northern Soul, Bronson, Marie Antoinette, Bel Ami), Lucy Pinder (The Royals, Age of Kill), Will Mellor (Two Pint of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, Line of Duty), Tyger Drew-Honey (Cuckoo, Outnumbered), Larry Lamb (EastEnders, The Hatton Garden Job), Marek Oravec (Captain America: The First Avenger), Wim Snape (The Full Monty, Coronation Street) and rising star Katy Clayton (Casualty, Shameless), Me, Myself & Di is a fun, feel-good and uplifting love story about being true to yourself.
