Recently we brought you the Debut UK trailer for the movie Orphan: First Kill, the prequel to the 2009 movie Orphan that first introduced us to Esther, now we bring you a review of the new movie that brings back the character and Isabelle Fuhrman with some clever de-ageing CGI and body doubles to take us back before the 2009 movie.
Esther’s terrifying saga continues in this thrilling prequel to the original and shocking horror hit “Orphan.” Esther’s (Isabelle Fuhrman, Orphan) secret may be out but this time around there’s more to this psychotic young girl than meets the eye.
Escaping from the psychiatric facility that housed her, Esther hides in plain sight by assuming the identity of a missing American child whose mother (Julia Stiles, Dexter) is the matriarch of one of the wealthiest families in the United States.
Creating a prequel to the original movie certainly has its challenges and one of them would be that this prequel has been made 13 years after the original movie, when Orphan was released in 2009 Fuhrman had just turned 11, so now that she is 23 we are treated to some rather good CGI to de-age her for the roll and for a lot of scenes body doubles to make us believe that we are watching Esther prior to the first time we were introduced to her.
Going back to 2009 one of the issues I had with the film was how did Esther get to an American orphanage from Estonia and thankfully Orphan First Kill fills in that plot hole, with that in mind this prequel works very well to answer the question that most fans of the first film had been asking.
The cast for Orphan First Kill has been chosen well with Julia Stiles playing the mother that has her own dark secrets trying to not only keep her post hidden but also in taking in Esther into her home with her husband and her son but as we know from the first movie Esther is far more of a challenge and a danger than your usual child.
It’s great to see Esther back on the big screen, although I have to say that there really weren’t any of those moments that made me jump, for me I found that Ophan First Kill was a little lacklustre on the shocks, but as a movie that has you wondering how it is all going to play out in end and how we will see the branch from this movie to the 2009 movie, it kept me intrigued.
The CGI is nicely done with the de-ageing to make a prequel to a film that has been made 13 years later and is based shortly before Orphan, if you are a fan of the first film then this is certainly one that you will want to check out.
The movie does start with a punch and it slows down a tad, but it’s the last part of the movie when we see Esther becoming the character that we first met in the 2009 movie as the violence and brutality starts to flow on to the screen.
