It was Monday Night at the Movies last night and I headed over to Cineworld in Broughton to see The Polar Express in 3D IMAX, a movie that when I first saw it back in 2004 it freaked me right out with the way the characters looked on the screen.
But seeing that we are into the festive season and the other day I went to see Gremlins in 4DX and last month saw Last Christmas, how could I not miss the chance to finally getting to see The Polar Express in 3D.
Released back in 2004, yes I know 15 years ago, The Polar Express is the story of a young boy who goes on a magical journey on Christmas Eve aboard a mystical train that arrives outside his house, he is joined by other children that may have lost their belief in Santa.
I saw The Polar Express in the cinema back in 2004 and haven’t seen it since, so to have the chance to see the festive movie back on the big screen again was brilliant and finally, I would get to see it in 3D and in IMAX.
This is a film that certainly has you feeling festive after you leave the cinema, I still found the characters strange to look at, but The Polar Express is a wonder of CGI technology and is listed in the 2006 Guinness Book of World Records as the “first all-digital capture” film, where all acted parts were done in digital capture, CGI has come along way in the last 15 years but it still works well on the big screen.
Back in 2004 I saw the film in 2D and last night was a sheer joy to see the film in 3D IMAX, the sound of the train first rolling up was amazing with the rumble of the train’s engine vibrating the cinema seats with the bass that was coming out of the IMAX sound system. Over the years I’ve seen many 3D IMAX films and I have to say that the 3D in The Polar Express looked amazing, it’s crisp and clean and certainly pops with its depth, even the opening scene of the bedroom has so much depth that the 3D is a joy to watch.
The Polar Express is a delightful film to watch and is certainly one that really has that Christmas feel to it, Tom Hanks voices six characters in the film and certainly brings those characters to live on the big screen and adds to the magic of the story.
I have to say a big thanks to Cineworld for showing The Polar Express in 3D IMAX and it’s certainly given me that warm festive feeling.
