I’ve always enjoyed Plant of the Apes since first seeing the original movie when I was a child and I always loved the TV series, with the franchise having a reboot in 2011 we are now back in the world run by apes with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes for the fourth film in the popular ape movies.
In the future, several generations after Caesar’s reign, apes have become the dominant species living harmoniously while humans live in the shadows. A new tyrannical ape leader is building his empire, and one young ape embarks on a harrowing journey that leads him to question his understanding of the past and make decisions that will shape the future for both apes and humans.
For those that have watched the last three Planet of the Apes films you will have seen how the story has unfolded over the films, the previous film was a bit of a tear-jerker at the end and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continues from that moment before jumping several generations ahead where we are introduced to Noa (voiced by Owen Teague) along with his friends who are on a quest.
The film appears to immerse us further into a world dominated by apes, as depicted in the classic movies of the 60s and 70s. Humans still seem to have more than just being playthings or slaves for the apes in the current timeline and although we do see a moment reminiscent of the 1968 movie with apes hunting the humans, we see that more humans can still speak that back in that movie.
But the adventure for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is Noa’s journey to becoming more than you expect him to be during his first introduction, I found myself being pulled into the story as it all unfolded and enjoyed the ride.
The experience of the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on the big screen is great, the sound the effects and the music all add to the fun of a movie that has been longly anticipated. The voice cast is perfect as are the “human” cast.
Over the years since the release of Rise back in 2011, the technology used for the creation of the CGI has advanced and this can be seen in this new chapter in the franchise, the visual effects look amazing on the big screen from the details of the Apes to the amazing looking scenery of an Earth that has been taken back by nature with the world looking lush and green.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the first in a new trilogy of Ape films. There is news that the final in this new trilogy will take us closer to the legacy ape movies that started with Planet of the Apes back in 1968, it will be interesting to see how it all unfolds over the next two films.
