It’s that time of year again when we head to Theatr Colwyn for this year’s pantomime, and this year’s production from Magic Light Productions is Mother Goose.
The other week I caught up with the cast during their rehearsals for Mother Goose and although I was sitting through some of the scenes being rehearsed I was in stitches so I was looking forward to seeing the show in its entirety at Wales’ oldest working theatre.
I look forward to the pantomimes at Theatr Colwyn every year and there hasn’t been a year that has disappointed me and this year was no exception, Magic Light Productions have brought us yet another show that is packed with laughter and brings pantomime back to its form of old-style theatre comedy that many of us grew up with in smaller theatres.
Mother Goose is packed with colourful sets, magical moments from all the cast, musical set pieces that all ages can sing along to and plenty of comedy to have your chuckle muscles getting a much-needed workout after the over-indulgence of Christmas Day dinner.
This year saw Magic Light Productions bring us something a little extra in the form of a rather comical video sequence with Mother Goose (played by the superb Stuart Loughland) as the classic panto steps it up with a social media twist and the big question, why was Mother Goose kicked off of Big Brother!
Stuart is still one of the best Panto dames I’ve seen over the many years of going to the theatre, his charm and comic timing in the roles is always something that I look forward to seeing at Theatr Colwyn every year.
As to the tradition of panto we have to have a villain and the lovely Libby Loughland plays Fairy Vanity and I loved every moment of her as the character that certainly has the kids, and adults, booing the character which is always a good sign that the role is being performed perfectly.
Steve Bloor plays Billy Goose and as always he is perfect in the role that he is playingr, I didn’t get to see much of Steve’s performance in the rehearsals that I was at, but even the parts I saw still had me laughing out loud during the show. Steve always works well on the stage with Stuart and the rest of the cast and I always look forward to that, ‘Well, we will have to do it again then won’t we, wooooo’ section of the show and this year the audience joined in to make the moment even more magical.
Joining Mother and Billy Goose on their journey to ‘Gooseland’ was Jill Gander (Joanna Pierce-Jones), Jonanna was lovely to watch and listen to as she brought us some lovely musical numbers that had the audience completely entertained. She also bounced off Steve and Stuart very well during their stage time together.
Now we do need a ‘Good Fairy’ in panto and this year we had a magical performance from the lovely Hanna Rose Silfeet as Fairy Virtue, she appeared on the stage each time in a poof of smoke and brought us a flawless performance throughout the evening.
Amongst the comedy, songs and magical story we were also treated to the wonderful florecent puppet show set to music that many of us that go to the Magic Light Productions shows have come to love and thoroughly enjoy. This year’s puppet performance was themed to the idea of money, thanks to the idea of Mother Goose’s ‘fame’ and of course that Pricillia the Goose lays Golden Eggs.
The musical Puppet show at the start of the second part of the show went down a storm with the audience and you could see the Christmas Spirit on the faces of old and young.
A special mention for the superb Pearl Shaw Dancers who brought an extra bit of visual entertainment to the show with their wonderful choreography which was a delight to watch as they brought us some eceelent dance sequences that were very enjoyable.
The Magic Light Productions shows at Theatr Colwyn are always something special each year, they harken back to the days of the smaller pantos without all the bells and whistles, the shows are sheer entertainment from start to finish and for me they are always the ones that have me laughing so much more than any other, this year was no exception and after coming out of the show I could feel the workout that my chuckle muscles had.
