Seagulls Could Be The New Flying Plague!

Let’s face it over the last few years seagulls have got even more annoying and dangerous on the North Wales coast, with many people not only being attacked in the streets, but also in the confines of their own gardens!

Most of my neighbours here in Towyn have been brutally attacked by the flying vermin and house-owners are at a loss on what they can do to prevent the seagulls from attacking and squawking for almost 24 hours a day.

I put the call out on Twitter and FaceBook recently to see what peoples points of view were about the seagulls and how they are causing havoc on the North Wales coastline.

After short while, several tweets starting coming in about the mess, the noise and the overall feel of the flying vermin!

On Facebook the response was just as interesting, before it lost its way in a certain forum!!

Jacquie –  “it’s not going to be to long before a child is seriously hurt. Babies on our street adults have been attacking and dive bombing people walking up the street and in our gardens.“

Susan – “When you live by the sea you can expect Seagulls!“

Lesley – “They were just as noisy all night during my recent stay at ygc last week. Thats inland..there do seem to be a lot more this year nesting on the roofs and constantly making a racket“

I’ve been in touch with Conwy Council with regards to the danger that people in their gardens are in with the seagulls and have still not had a response from them, major issues in built up areas seem to be food waste left around for the birds to scavenge and the idiotic people who think that feeding the gulls is not doing any harm, but with that I beg to differ as feeding them only entices them to come further and further in land for food.

In the last 30+ years they have been getting worse, when I was a child, the seagulls were mainly on the beach and no further inland, but more recently they come inland even more, the problem, humans! The majority of people don’t think there is any harm in feeding seagulls and coaxing them to next on their roofs, but as we can plainly see and hear, it is an issue and people have to understand the problems that these birds can cause.

Where Do We Stand When In Comes To Gulls And The Law?

All species of gull are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985.

This makes it illegal to intentionally or, in Scotland and Northern Ireland, recklessly injure or kill any gull or damage or destroy an active nest or its contents. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, it is also illegal to prevent birds from accessing their nest, and in Northern Ireland, it is illegal to disturb any nesting bird. In addition, the Mediterranean gull is protected under Schedule 1 of both Acts making it illegal to intentionally or recklessly disturb the birds at or close to their nest or to disturb their dependent young. – Source The RSPB

Now before those many “bird lovers” out there start screaming and shouting about “culls” etc. I’m not saying anything about culls, birds have the right as much as we and any other species that lives on our lovely planet, but people need to learn some rules and not to feed the seagulls and don’t leave food waste around for them to scavenge, we have a neighbour that is adamant that she won’t stop feeding them and this in turn has caused the sudden influx of flying vermin!
