Shark movies are always popular and new movie The Shallows takes is to a dangerous place! Nancy (Blake Lively) is only 200 yards from the shore when she is attacked by a great white shark (a shark made famous in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws).
Can Nancy complete her short journey to safety? Or will the great white win in this psychological battle of wills. Not the first shark movie to hit the big screen. It’s time to pick out a few favourite movies with bite.
Jaws
The ultimate and probably the best shark movie that has terrified audiences, not just with the famous eye-bulging head popping out of the boat, but also the famous “dur dum, dur dum” music, composed by the amazing John Williams, that forewarns us of the impending shark attack. Who doesn’t get goosebumps every time they hear it?
Deep Blue Sea
Who would have thought that searching for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease would be so deadly, playing with nature is the wrong way to go when the sharks become intelligent and decide that enough is enough. With a great cast, the film is a non-stop roller coaster ride, as the sharks hunt down everyone on board the scientific complex.
Deep Blue Sea may possibly have one of those scenes, much like Jaws, instead of you saying “Get out of the water”, you’re screaming at Samuel L. Jackson, “Get away from the moon pool you’re amazing speech is going to be cut short! Too Late”.
Sharknado
Take a tornado add sharks and what do you get? A Sharknado, a movie with a real twist to it (no pun intended). Possible one of the most loved and hated shark movies and that’s fans that both love and hate it at the same time. This modern-day B-Movie has a freak hurricane scooping sharks and dropping them down on unsuspecting shark-bait, us!
And who would have thought that this shark-tastic movie would have spawn three sequels! The Second One, Oh Hell No! and The 4th Awakens!
Shark Tale
One for the kids and the big kids, sharks aren’t always munching on human bait, they can be rather cute as well and “Shark Tale” is one of those movies, released by Pixar in 2004, the film tells the story of a shark mafia boss (Robert De Niro) who’s son has been tragically killed while out hunting, which gives his pray Oscar (Will Smith) and the mafia bosses other son Lenny (Jack Black) a vegetarian shark to go on the run. Packed to the fins with a talented voice cast including Al Pacino, Angelina Jolie, Renne Zellweger (who will be returning soon in Bridget Jones’ Baby) and more.
2-Headed Shark Attack
And you thought Jaws was terrifying, how about a shark with two heads! Yes, you read that right, two heads! This B-Movie has gigantic mutated two-headed shark attacking a ship full of students (I feel sorry for students in these films, always getting a raw deal!). The survivors wash up on the shore of a tiny island, safe at last, well you would think so.
But in a twist of scripted fate, a tsunami sweeps them back into the sea and much time for the shark. It’s a crazy movie and a long way from Spielberg’s classic Jaws.
Looks like shark movies are here to stay and bite back with more shocks, screams and a bit of humour thrown in, better makes sure we get a bigger boat to watch them on.
