So last night was the latest in the Cineworld Unlimited Screenings and the movie was the much anticipated Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins starring Henry Golding (Last Christmas).
“Origin” movies are nothing new, remember X-Men Wolverine: Origins or maybe that’s one that is best forgotten, Snake Eyes brings us a back story to the character that we last saw on the big screen in G.I.Joe: Retaliation.
The new movie takes us back to when Snake Eyes was a child and an incident that sparks a lifelong quest for revenge, an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage welcomes loner Snake Eyes after he saves the life of their heir apparent. Once he arrives in Japan he starts his training to become part of the clan and become a ninja warrior, but secrets never lie buried forever and when his past is revealed his honour and allegiance to the Arashikage is questioned.
I have to say that when I first saw the trailer a while back I was really looking forward to seeing the movie. The action sequences looked amazing and it was a character I wanted to learn more about. The action in the film is stunning as well as the choreography for the fight scenes, but Snake Eyes just seemed to bore me!
Action, Action, Action!
There really isn’t much there in the film to keep it glued together, yes it looks and sounds good, but the action just seems to be run of the mill. Fight after fight, chase after chase and sadly not that much of a build of the characters, even Golding’s character has a quick moment at the start as a child and that’s about it.
Snake Eyes does have a great cast list with Andrew Koji, Haruka Abe, Iko Uwais, Peter Mensah and Samara Weaving but even they can’t keep the attention span for the film, which to be honest is a real shame as this movie had so much potential to build the characters backstories up.

Summary
Not what I was expecting, it’s not very often that you can say an action film was boring, but sadly this is one of those films. So much potential to reboot the G.I. Joe franchise that falls flat.
