Every so often a track comes along that just gets burned into your mind and True Romance by The Cope is certainly one of those tracks. So here on Blazing Minds, we thought we would bring you a review of this new single.
Known within the music industry for their work behind the scenes but now stepping out with their own unique musical & visual project, electronic producers David Anthony Curley and Joe Furlong arrive with their debut single and self-directed video for “True Romance” out on August 3rd and announce themselves as The Cope.
True Romance kicks off with some wonderful vocals that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention, add to this the wonderful choreography with Zoe Hollinshead and Matt Foley by Zoë Ashe-Browne in the video you have the feeling the track is going to be something a little special, and then the synths and beat kick in and take the track in the dance direction, but at the same time keeping the flow of the wonderful vocals that become more instrument than vocal.
Although the track is only on for 4mins it really seems too short and I wanted it to keep going, so much so that when listening to this True Romance I found myself putting the track on loop on my trusty iPod, which I have to say I don’t do very often, the audio production of the track from The Cope is amazing, the quality on earbuds, headphones and a good speaker system is wonderful to listen to, the synths flow so well throughout the track as do the vocals, OK there really aren’t much to the lyrics, only a couple of set phrases but this just works and it works perfectly for the track.
The Cope are based in Dublin and Berlin, the songwriting, producing, filmmaking, and audio-visual artist pair, have been crafting their sound since meeting at an impromptu karaoke party in late 2019. Frantically YouTubing songs like Work It by Marie Davidson, Never Come Back by Caribou and Intergalactic by Beastie Boys, their karaoke party turned into a dance party as songs from The Blaze, Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Soulwax, Rüfüs du Sol and Justice were added to the mix.
About the single and video, director Curley says “Mirroring the themes of the track, the film is a meditation on love, isolation and control. We wanted to create a visual accompaniment to accentuate the listening experience and so we teamed up with acclaimed Belgian-based Irish choreographer Zoë Ashe-Browne. Marrying film, music and dance elevates each art form to a higher plane, and this is something we are very passionate about.”
The last 2 years have seen us starved of dancing and human connection. Creating this music throughout 2020 and 2021 was a way for Curley and Furlong to tap into the feeling of collective catharsis when they couldn’t see their friends. “If this music can facilitate people reconnecting with those moments then our job is done,” says Furlong. “All we want to do is make people dance.”

Recorded and produced by the duo at The Clinic Recording Studios, Curley’s recently opened studio in Dublin, mixed by James Eager, and mastered by Stuart Hawkes at Metropolis Studios, London, True Romance is perfectly placed to soundtrack the dancefloors of 2022 and beyond.
