The Microchip That Ruined Halloween will be a welcome addition to the pantheon of horror-comedy. Over the last few years, I have watched with glee as this particular genre has gotten some serious love from audiences. My personal favourite, The Santa Clarita Diet, did a great job in balancing observational humour with shock and gore. Everything about this genre has a realness to it, giddy, weird, unexpected, and self-consciously bizarre. For somebody who grew up as a horror fan and only later started becoming a comedy geek, this movie really checks all the boxes.
Plot-wise, BreakOut Music takes on a rather loopy sort of stance, the kind of thing that stumbles around with joyous glee. By bringing Jackie Hoffman into the fray, there is that additional edge that feels just right. Over the course of the movie, the initial structure of the plot gradually falls apart in the best way possible. Akin to a bit of a Jenga puzzle, the way that the first bit of control is lost further adds to the unexpected journey. They sidestep regular tropes of the genre as well, for the humour itself is surreal, almost ironic in its tone.
A playful little piece and a sorely needed respite from all the Marvel movies out right now, this is the sort of thing we really needed. ‘The Microchip That Ruined Halloween’ is creative and highly unexpected, set to come to screens this fall.
