The other night was the night of watching three bands, The Royston Club, Fever and of course my fave The Montagues at The Front Room in Rhyl.
The Royston Club knocked out some great original tunes, a really good way to start off the evening. A band of young lads originating from Wrexham really got the crowd off to a great start.
The Royston Club are a four-piece indie band formed in Wrexham, North Wales in late 2018. The band consist of Tom Faithfull (Lead Vocals and Rhythm Guitar), Ben Matthias (Lead Guitar and Songs), Sam Jones (Drums) and Dave Tute (Bass) and have gone from strength to strength in their short time of playing together.
Tom, Ben and Dave all started playing together in 2017 due to their shared passion for playing indie music having met at secondary school and asked Sam to join in 2018 to complete the band. Having gained a loyal local following, the band released their first single Shawshank in March 2019 which due to the amazing reception and success of the single, prompted the band to release Waster in May 2019, Kerosene in October 2019 and now there most recent single Mariana.
Then it was time for Fever, another great group of lads, with original songs, and again got the crowd going. I don’t know much about those groups, but they have some wicked sounds to them, and will certainly be looking into more of their music. 2 great indie bands to look out for in the future.
Fever are James Harrod, Mitchell Capes, Charley May, Sam Howell & Joe Gray. Formed in 2019, this five-piece is the latest cultural ambassadors flying the flag for the city of Hull.
Their debut single, ‘Jungle Man’, produced by Pat Pretorius of AOO Studios, was released via Blossoms’ record label, Very Clever Records, on Friday 4th October 2019. This earned national radio play on Radio X where Gordon Smart described the song as “sounding like it’s going be very special live”, as well as on BBC 6 Music where Chris Hawkins described the tune as “an anthem”.
Then coming up to ten o clock, we were entertained by The Montagues (and the crowd went wild), not only were we pushed forward, as everyone surged to the front to see them, it certainly went very bonkers as soon as the lads started their first track Devils (a fave of mine), off their debut EP Calibrate.
The Montagues are Kyle Parry, Johnny Taylor, Jack Wells and (on loan) CRY’s lead vocalist Dylan Lloyd.
This band formed late 2018, and descend from the North Wales coast. Their debut EP album has had numerous airplay throughout North Wales radio shows including the craziest north wales radio show on Phase Radio Wales. They’ve even had one of their tracks featured on Salford City FC training track.
These lads are a breath of fresh air, and are destined for greatness.
As the night went on and everyone is singing out loud to their tracks, the floor was literally bouncing, people were on each other’s shoulders, it was mental, but so entertaining. This did not deter the lads at all from carrying on with their set, that’s how professional they are.
I have followed this band for over a year now! Wow (just realised that), and I can safely say these are the nicest down to earth lads I have ever come across from a band. I actually would go as far to say as calling them friends (I may not be theirs though haha). They appreciate the support from anyone, and always thank people. Their music really resonates with me, and that is what first struck me about these guys. All their songs have different meanings for different people, and I would even think for the band it is different for them.
Their new single “You Got it All (wrong)”, was released on Valentine’s Day, and what a tune. How I interpret this track, was having dealt and still dealing with mental health issues myself, was that we should never be afraid of bearing our scars. It is an upbeat rock kind of song, but my god, it strikes a chord with me. Anyone that has listened to the EP Calibrate, I would say each song has a different meaning, and everyone is different.
These guys are super down to earth friendly guys, and have a great support network within the community.
Support your unsigned bands, and I urge you to watch The Montagues live. Absolutely fantastic.
