Now here’s a movie I’ve been dying to see starring Nicolas Cage and thanks to Cineworld and another Unlimited Screening I got to check out The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent a little earlier than its release date.
Cage plays a version of himself in this new action-comedy, he’s strapped for cash and agrees to make an appearance at a billionaire’s party, but this is no ordinary billionaire (Pedro Pascal) he is a super fan of Cage. The CIA use Cage to get to the suspected drug kingpin and take his cartel down, but all it is not what it seems and we are taken on a rollercoaster of a comedy ride from start to finish.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is certainly a movie that loves to poke fun at itself and its lead role, Nicolas Cage is, well, Nick Cage and I found myself enjoying every moment of screen time that he has in the movie as he tries to work with the CIA as well as make friends with billionaire Javi Gutierrez (Pascal) while all the time trying to make sure that he isn’t found out and work on the script for a movie that Javi wants to make with his idol.
Pascal and Cage work brilliantly on the screen together, there is some real laugh out loud moments throughout the movie that makes this probably one of the better comedies that I have seen this year so far, look out for a moment when Javi and Nick take some LSD and then while working on ideas for the script they become paranoid that they are being watched by a couple of guys.
There are some great moments when we get more Cage than you would expect with some great scenes with the current Nick Cage having a conversation with his younger self (Nicky), all nicely done with some of that CGI that makes an actor look like their younger selves and it looks great and works great, be warned though there is a freaky moment with some Cage on Cage! That’s all I’m saying about that one.
As I mentioned earlier the CIA is trying to take down the drug kingpin and the two operatives Vivan (Tiffany Haddish) and Martin (Ike Barinholtz) are working with Cage to complete their mission, suffice to say they do add some nice comedy elements into The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent although some of the scenes that we see with them in the red band trailer do seem to but cut down in the movie itself, which is a shame, but the scenes still work.
I would have liked to seen a little more from the two CIA characters but hey, this is a film about the massive talent of Nick Cage and that’s what we are going to see the movie for isn’t it.
Along with the ride is Sharon Horgan who plays Cage’s wife Olivia and Lilly Mo Sheen as his daughter Addy, both of which come more into the action of the film as it progresses.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is not what I expected after seeing the trailer, it is so much better than I was hoping for with plenty of moments that had me laughing out loud with my fellow Cineworld Unlimited Card Members, the movie has some great set pieces and direction from Tom Gormican and an enjoyable soundtrack from Mark Isham (Bill & Ted Face The Music, The Accountant)
