Thumping Sounds Heard Late At Night In Rhyl and Towyn

In the late hours of Thursday night and the early hours of Friday, a dense thumping noise could be heard on the North East coast of Wales in Rhyl, Kimmel Bay, Towyn and some even heard it in Abergele.

The pounding was concerning a lot of people and was also annoying many as the sound consistently thumped at a steady timed pace.

But the question being asked was, “What was causing it?”

Some people thought that it may be late night work on the Pont y Ddraig bridge.

But I’ve since found out that the annoying thumping sound was “piling” for the wind farm that is just off the coast of Rhyl and for some bizarre reason they decided to do it from around 11pm till 1am.

So What Is Piling?

Prefabricated piles are driven into the ground using a pile driver. Driven piles are either wood, reinforced concrete, or steel. Wooden piles are made from the trunks of tall trees. Concrete piles are available in square, octagonal, and round cross-sections (like Franki Piles). They are reinforced with rebar and are often prestressed. Steel piles are either pipe piles or some sort of beam section (like an H-pile).

Historically, wood piles used splices to join multiple segments end-to-end when the driven depth required was too long for a single pile; today, splicing is common with steel piles, though concrete piles can be spliced with mechanical and other means. Driving piles, as opposed to drilling shafts, is advantageous because the soil displaced by driving the piles compresses the surrounding soil, causing greater friction against the sides of the piles, thus increasing their load-bearing capacity. Driven piles are also considered to be “tested” for weight-bearing ability because of their method of installation; thus the motto of the Pile Driving Contractors’ Association. – WikiPedia

Mystery Solved!

So there we have it, mystery solved. If you do live in the area and did hear the thumping in the early hours, then please let me know your thoughts and do you think that this tupe of work should have been carried out at such a late time.
