Many of you reading the posts on Blazing Minds will have seen us bring you the news of the first look trailer and then the new trailer and poster artwork for the new movie Werewolves Within, so today we bring you a review of the movie which is out on Digital Platforms and DVD from the 19th July from Signature Entertainment.

Now before I bring you my thoughts on the movie I have to say that I have never played the video game that Werewolves Within is based upon so I can’t bring you a comparison of the game to movie adaptation, but I can bring you my overall thoughts of this new comedy horror.

New Forest Ranger Fin (Sam Richardson, Veep) arrives in the small US town of Beaverfield a town that certainly has its very quirky residents, Fin and postal worker Cecily (Milana Vayntrub, Marvel’s New Warriors) take us on a tour of the town and an introduction of the characters all with their own unique traits with most of them being bizarre, but very nicely done.

But things start to go wrong one night when Trisha Anderton’s (Michaela Watkins) dog is brutally murdered, it’s now down to Fin to find who or what killed the dog that Trisha treats like her baby. Then things become worse as the powerlines go down and a body is discovered that seems to have been attacked and gnawed upon by an animal!

As the residents decide to stay the night in the hotel owned by Jeanine (Catherine Curtin), they all start to disagree with one another and are spurned on my Sam Parker (Wayne Duvall) who is there to put an oil pipeline through the small town as he tries to buy them off to get his pipeline laid!

After seeing the trailer for the film a while back I was excited to see the film and I have to say that I loved every moment of the film, it’s not what I was expecting but sometimes that can be good as you are given an idea of how something is going to play out from a trailer and Werewolves Within just throws in a curve ball when it comes to how the film runs.

A while back I reviewed the brilliant Knives Out which got me back into the Whodunnit genre and now with Werewolves Within I’ve been introduced to the Horrorwhodunnit, this film is more like “claws out“, it works and it works brilliantly as the film keeps you guessing to who is the killer.

Director Josh Ruben (Scare me) has done a great job not only keeping the suspense of the screenplay by Mishna Wolff but also the comedy horror element, its not so much “jump scares” but more like “jump laughs“, there are many moments that in a true horror that you would scream, but with with this film I found myself laughing out loud probably more than I should do, but it was just so funny.

There is some nice writing with the banter between the characters as they bounce off each other and I loved Fin’s “heavens to Betsy” moments as he tries so much to curb his language, I just found those moments so innocent and loveable for his character compared to the language from the other characters.

The quirky characters really give the film a touch of comedy and adding the inclusion of scenes of mild horror there are lots of moments that had me laughing out loudly, this is certainly a film that is one of my favourite comedies this year and is one that I could watch several times.
