This years Rhyl Air Show was another successful year where the crowds came in droves to see the aerobatics and the BBC WWI during the two days of the air show.
The aviation extravaganza saw around 170,000 visitors (50,000 on Saturday and 120,000 on the Sunday) flock to the area over the weekend to watch impressive air displays including a performance by the Red Arrows.
On the ground, a BBC World War One At Home Tour exhibition was held – actor Larry Lamb and One Show presenter Lucy Seigle both made appearances.
The show was hailed a “great success” by organisers at Denbighshire County Council.
Jamie Groves, Denbighshire’s head of Communication, Marketing and Leisure said: ‘We were extremely delighted that so many people came to support this year’s event. It was a great turnout for one of our major events in the Summer calendar, bringing with it huge economic benefits to the county.
“Yet again, we had an impressive line up of aircrafts to entertain the crowds and the weather certainly played its part and there was very much a ‘feel good’ factor around the event.
“The Air Show comes hot on the heels of the Proms on the Prom and Gwyl Ger y Môr festivals staged at the Events Arena the previous weekend. The success of these events shows that Denbighshire is geared up to hosting major events that draw in large crowds and we look forward to emulating this success at future events hosted in Rhyl and county-wide.
With the weather a little bit damp on the Saturday, it didn’t stop everyone from going to the show which has become one of the key events in Rhyl’s calendar.
But the main attraction, as always, was the Red Arrows and they would be closing the show on the Sunday and boy did they have the weather and the crowds for it.
Sunday had clear blue skies and people came from all over to not only see the Red Arrows but the other planes that were clearly visible in the gorgeous August sunshine.
With many people on the beach, in the Rhyl Events Arena, sitting on the grass bank of the bridge in to the Children’s Village and also people taking to one of the amazing viewpoints, Graig Fawr (Meliden Mountain) where the Red Arrows were clearly visible during their performance.
Bloco Swn (featured image in this article) have had a wonderful reception in Rhyl all summer. Lovely that our season finished on a sunny day and with big crowds. As well as the airshow, Well done to Rhyl for acknowledging the 100 years since the outbreak of ww1. – Colin Daimond
With such a successful year again for the Rhyl Air Show, we can most probably be assured that we will have another amazing air show next year for the local crowds and tourist to thoroughly enjoy and who says there is nothing going on in Rhyl!!!
