Today we bring you a review of The Pebble and the Boy which is directed and written by Chris Green (Me, Myself and Di) and is a British comedy inspired by Mod Culture. The film features songs by Paul Weller with the title is taken from the final track on Weller’s eighth studio album, As Is Now.
The movie starts off with a rather sombre scene of the funeral of John’s father, but the love for his father by others is shown by the amounts of Mods on their scooters as they give him a well-deserved and emotional send-off and after the wake is over Johh (Patrick McNamee) is surprised by the delivery of his father old scooter, his initial thought us to sell the scooter but his emotions take hold of him and instead he decides not to and to take his father’s ashes to Brighton giving his dad one last journey.
Upon John’s journey to Brighton, he has his problems with the scooter, but he is helped out by one of his dad’s friends where he meets Nikki (Sacha Parkinson) and the two set off with his dad’s ashes on a trip which will take them on a journey of discovery of family secrets and a road trip that will see John getting more than he bargained for.
Quintessential comedy-drama of Mod culture and music
Chris Green has brought us a lovely quintessential comedy-drama of Mod culture and music with his story, with some lovely shot moments of Brighton as well as some great scenes between McNamee and Parkinson. Green certainly brings over his direction style that we last saw in the British comedy Me, Myself and Di, he certainly brings his characters to life very well on the screen and the cast helps make that work as well.
Although The Pebble and the Boy may not be packed to the rafters with laughs, the comedy is subtle and is used at the right moments to carry the story on nicely, the film is much more drama than comedy but the story flows well and the character development builds slowly so that we get chance to get to know the lead characters and how the trip to Brighton is changing them.
An Emotional and Fun Ride
It’s nice to see a lot of the British made movies making a comeback and The Pebble and the Boy is certainly one that is enjoyable to watch and just relax to, it is nicely shot with some great colouring and cinematography that gives it the polished look, but still holds on to that home-grown production in the UK.
With the interest of the world of the Mods and Rockers returning to the limelight with the release of To Be Someone, where the cast of the classic Mods and Rockers movie Quadrophenia from 1979 reunite, this movie is one that will be a pleasant trip back to Brighton of days gone by and an emotional one for anyone who may have taken the same journey.
The Pebble and the Boy release date is set for the 27th of August.
