Music Review: Pollyanna by The Montagues

When I was asked to review the new track from The Montagues ‘Pollyanna’, I was ecstatic, to say the least. I have followed these lads since early 2019 when they aired on a local radio station Phase Radio with Karen Woodham, who promotes new music and upcoming unsigned bands, and I have been very lucky to have witnessed these lads at a live gig numerous times. They have played in various venues, from ‘Bar 236’ in Prestatyn to Liverpool’s ‘Jimmys’ and ‘EBGBS’. Keep a close eye on their pages for upcoming gigs.

A group of guys that certainly know how to write a track that you can always relate to, don’t believe me, then check out their debut EP ‘Calibrate’.

The Montagues derive from the North Wales coastline, and are an indie band that have a montage of great music tracks behind them, which have mostly come from their debut EP ‘Calibrate’. Band members are: Kyle Parry (lead vocals/guitar), Jonny Taylor (Bass player), Jack Mayall (Guitar), Jack Wells (Drums) and Oli Harman (Keyboard). They are a band that appreciate every single member of their fans following and have always got time for a chat at the end of one of their gigs.

Today, they have released their brand-new single ‘Pollyanna’. And what a track it truly is, all of the musical elements added, stirred together to release a great concoction that will soothe your soul, and give you nothing but good vibes. Starting off with the lyrics, wondering what side you’re on, a bit like football, and if you’re not sure, then it is up to you if you are going to pick a side. Then bringing in the drums, bass, guitars, and the song kicks off with a very catchy tune. Then comes the lyrics

‘coz nothing happens to good people, I wish I could take your pain

This really struck a chord with me (excuse the pun), but seeing people go through hard times, and wishing you can take away their pain, is what the majority of people have been going through these last 2 years, and wishing there was an end to it all, and you could take away the pain from the people that have suffered, and those people thinking that nothing good is going to happen to them now.

Going into the chorus

‘We are, we are, we are, living in a dream,

We are, we are, we are, ripping at the seams,

You’re Pollyanna because you gotta see it through, see it through!’

Wow, tell-tale lyrics to say that we can be living in a dream or a nightmare, but we are gonna see it through, and come out the other side.

‘it’s like a wave keeps crashing over, I stand it knocks me down,

As soon as I’m on my feet again, I know that I will drown.’

Hearing these particular lyrics resonates to me in particular, surrounding grief, having that feeling of drowning as the waves come over, and then as soon as you’re ready to get back on your feet again, you can get knocked down with something else.

Within the fantastic recipe of lyrics this track offers, the melody has elements of ‘Arctic Monkeys’, Catfish and the Bottlemen’ ‘Nothing But Thieves’, ‘Two Door Cinema Club’, ‘Stereophonics’, such a high calibre of groups there, but you can hear their influences through this track.

These are just amazing lyrics, feel like I have given enough of the lyrics away, but you need to listen to it in its entirety to appreciate it, and also how it resonates with yourselves, it could have a completely different meaning to you than it has to me.

What an absolutely wicked track, along with the melody and lyrics, again The Montagues have knocked and smashed this right out of the park. I can see this track doing extremely well, and I urge everyone to go download stream this track first of all, and if you haven’t already, go and get their debut EP ‘Calibrate’.

This track is already another favourite of mine, and I really cannot wait I am super excited about what is ahead for these guys, coz they just keep going from

strength to strength each time they bring a new track out, and the meaning of them…..WOW! Truly amazing lyrics lads.
