I’ve been making more of my Cineworld Unlimited card lately and the other night headed out to catch the new action movie starring Gerard Butler, Angel Has Fallen, the sequel to the 2016 movie London Has Fallen.
Let’s go back a few years to where this all started, back in 2013 Gerard Butler introduced us to Mike Banning in Olympus Has Fallen when a disgraced Secret Service agent (and former presidential guard) found himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack; using his inside knowledge, Banning worked with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers, amongst non-stop action and gunfights.

Then in 2016, Mike Banning (Butler) returned to the big screen, but this time the action headed over the pond to blighty in London Has Fallen, where Banning found himself in London for the Prime Minister’s funeral and with Mike’s luck he found himself caught up in a plot to assassinate all the attending world leaders. Suffice to say, this was another action-packed movie with massive fight scenes, huge explosions and showed that Butler can certainly kick ass.
Now three years later Mike Banning is back in America in Angel Has Fallen where Banning is framed for the attempted assassination of the President (Morgan Freeman) and must evade his own agency and the FBI as he tries to uncover the real threat.
As with the previous “Fallen” movies, Angel Has Fallen is packed with action, it’s what you’ve come to expect from the franchise, as Banning is hunted down by Agent Thompson (Jada Pinkett Smith) the movie is a rollercoaster ride of car chases, fight scenes and huge explosions and gunfire especially when Clay Banning (Nick Nolte) comes on the scene and just blows the heck out of everything.

With many action movies, such as Angel Has Fallen, don’t expect the brain cells to get used that much, working out who the villain is doesn’t take too long, heck we are shown fairly quickly who it is, but this doesn’t distract us from what the film is, it’s an action movie and that’s what we go to see.
Gerard Butler still has the moves for the Mike Banning character, although there are parts where you think he does need to take the job that the President has offered him to take it easy, rather than dodging bullets. But for the viewer it’s all a bit of fun, heck it’s nice to escape from the humdrum world and enter a world of something for a couple of hours in a cinema with air-con.
I have to say that I love the craziness and with the horror, animated and fantasy movies that I’ve been watching lately, it’s nice to get back to watching a good old bare-knuckle action movie that I don’t have to overthink and just enjoy.
This Time Banning Has Fallen!!
