Ladies and Gentlemen it’s time for another Blogger Interview, this interview is with Miki Pacifico from Sparrowquilts, a blog which I had missed on my rounds of blogs to read on the internet, but thanks to Miki getting in touch with me, I’m proud to bring the latest Blogger Interview.
Please tell us a little something about yourself?
Well, my name is Miki (I promise its not short for anything) and I am originally from Los Angeles, CA. I’ve been all over though! I’ve lived in Seattle and now I live just outside of Philadelphia, PA. My background is in art and fashion design, but these days I channel my obsessive behavior into quilting and sewing children’s apparel.
So tell us about your blog, when and why you started it and how you came up with the name for it?
My blog is mostly focused on quilting projects and any work in progress. I host quilt block swap and challenge groups on Flickr and some of my content is directed towards supplementing that as well. I call it Sparrow Quilts because in the 1800’s my family’s last name was Sparrow. Super cool right? I really wish I could change my last name to that now, but I think my husband would probably take issue with that.
Do you find blogging takes up a lot of your time?
Yes, blogging definitely takes time. It isn’t even the content that is long-winded. I find most of my time is taken up with creating and editing the imagery that goes along with the content. I think a great blog post is 50% great content and 50% beautiful corresponding imagery. In the end, its completely worth the effort when someone appreciates the work you put into it!
Where would you say most of your traffic comes from for your blog?
I utilize a hefty bit of social media to populate my blog. I am a member of quite a few blogging communities, but since crafting and quilting is such a visual activity, I find that Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter are my best traffic sources because people can see what they are getting before they arrive.
Do you use social networks to promote your blog and if so which ones would you recommend to other bloggers?
I definitely recommend Pinterest and Twitter. Facebook is great, but unless you have a strong following on your business or fan page, its not going to take you very far. My great aunts might think my stuff is cute, but they aren’t really the audience I am looking for. Pinterest is great because if you categorize your boards appropriately, your content can really gain some traction. Twitter is useful because you can call out a thought leader and pull in new traffic with hashtags. There are just a lot more opportunities to expand your audience in those two versus some of the other social media outlets.
How do you promote your blog? Have you created a promotion plan?
Most of my promotion so far has been through social media, however I do have a background in online marketing. Once I get a bit more content and followers I plan on starting up a low budget pay-per-click campaign to push the revenue-producing side of the blog (selling my custom quilts!).
If you could give some useful advice to new bloggers, what would it be?
Don’t give up. It takes a lot of work to start a business, and essentially that is what your blog is. You will eat, sleep, sweat, fever dream, and absorb everything that is blogging just to get it off the ground. Once its coasting on the cloud of good blogging though, it will really pay for itself! Just put yourself out there and dont give up!
