We caught up with actor, writer and producer Bruce L Hart. Bruce has appeared in numerous LGBTQ+ themed films and episodic shows, and he now has a new film coming out, with several other projects in development.
Question: So the title of your new film is “Breaking the Rules”?
Answer: Yes it is, and the title couldn’t be more accurate. It’s about a gay couple played by me and Peter Szeliga who decide to throw the rules of fidelity to the wind and emulate their fun-loving friends who are VERY open in their marriage.
Question: Sounds kind of racy!
Answer: Oh that element is in there. We definitely have some sexy fun moments. But we also have some moments of pathos and, of course, genuine love.
Question: What’s one of your favourite moments in “Breaking the Rules”?
Answer: Wow, I’m biased but I really love the entire story. However, there is a really fun plot point where my character’s sister, played by Rebekah Kochan, decides she wants to experiment with bisexuality. And of course, she takes on more than she can handle and winds up on a date with a very amorous woman (Shaun Landry) in a very gay women’s bar. I also love how conventional the two central characters are as they try to experiment with being open, in contrast to their more wild friends Marc and Richard, played by Leon Acord and Brian Nolan, who have some really funny dialogue.
Question: You’ve worked with most of these performers before haven’t you?
Answer: I have worked with all of these performers before. Rebekah was in the film “Homewrecker” with me, as was Peter. Leon and I both were regulars on the series “Old Dogs and New Tricks”, and Shaun Landry made an appearance on that series, and Brian and I did two other films together, “The Trouble with Barry” and also “Bro What Happened?” I love to work with people I know and trust. It makes for a much smoother production and all of these people are pros.
Question: Tell us about the sexy young man in “Breaking the Rules” who disrupts the main couple.
Answer: That would be Daytime Emmy winner Jake Hunter. He auditioned for the film almost on a whim since he was in the casting offices for another film audition and our casting director spotted him. He is amazing in the film and he’s also done a ton of other work both as an actor and a producer.
Question: So where can we see “Breaking the Rules”?
Answer: Hopefully everywhere very soon! It’s headed to lots of streaming platforms and of course, we’ll be sharing those specific updates as they happen. I’m so proud of this film, and it’s exciting to see it come to fruition.
Question: And do you have anything else in development?
Answer: Yes! My brother Paul Hart (director) and I have a holiday film in pre-production. We’re hoping to go in front of the camera in late August with a tentative release date in mid-2024.
