Cyber Bullying on Social Media

Let’s face it folks Cyber Bullying is happening, it’s going on while you are reading this, someone somewhere is firing off their ridiculous threats and trying to undermine the very foundations of someone’s soul, all for cheap thrills and being sick and depraved in the way they are treating another fellow human-being.

In the last few days, of typing this article out, a friend of mine has been viciously attacked by someone on Facebook, yes Facebook, that place where so much seems to go on and the big wigs take time to sort things out, suffice to say this atrocious attack on him was unwarranted, disgraceful and showed that people have no idea what they are doing to the person that they are attacking.

After reading the conversation from the attack, I was completely shocked at how any fellow human-being could treat someone in such a way, what goes through their mind when they are Cyber Bullying, is it all just for a quick sick thrill or for some evil vendetta that they may have on someone!

Cyber Bullying Effects All Ages

When it comes to this Cyber Bullying, age, race, sex or even a disability doesn’t matter, from children through teens to adults, everyone can be affected by the attacks, my friend is a wonderful guy and he is someone who wouldn’t say boo to a goose! But, still a victim of someone who for reasons unknown to others, had to be such a nasty piece of work!

Luckily for him, he has many friends that support him and helped with this terrible Cyber Bully, but if you do know someone who may be the victim of Cyber Bullying, then there are several ways that you can help and support them such as:

  • Reinforce that no one deserves to be treated in this way and that they have done nothing wrong
  • Ensure that they know that there is help available to them
  • Encourage them to talk to a teacher that they trust so they feel they have somewhere safe at school to go to
  • Encourage them to talk to their parents/carers and if this isn’t possible to write a letter or speak to another family member
  • Take screen shots of the cyber bullying so that they have proof this is happening
  • Report all abuse to the relevant social media networks by clicking on the “report abuse” button
  • Keep a diary so they have somewhere safe and private to write down their innermost thoughts and feelings which will help to avoid feelings bottling up
  • Give praise for being so brave and talking things through which will hopefully empower them to take responsibility and get help
  • Sending abuse by email or posting it into a web board can be harassment and if this has happened make a complaint to the police who can trace IP addresses etc
  • Ask the school if they have a School Liaison Police Officer that can help in this situation and talk to the school about the dangers and effects

The shocking thing is a lot of these Cyber Bullies do these sort of things on Facebook and Twitter with majority of them using a profile that is open for everyone to see, in the case that sparked me to write this article, the Bully posts everything on Facebook as public and obviously is proud of his idiotic behaviour!

Cyber Bullying Can Be Devastating

Sometimes Cyber Bullying can lead to much more than just a stream of abuse on Social Media, besides the name calling, abusive comments and more, the Bullying can lead to the victim being sent on a path of no return, there have been reports in the news of young people, in particular, taking their lives because of some idiot that thinks it’s fun to blast someone’s self-esteem and try to destroy their life for whatever reason they feel fit to do it for!

It doesn’t matter what age you are if you are being a victim of Cyber Bullying it can lead to depression or even suicide, is destroying someone’s life really worth it, is it that much fun that you think you may have got away with it but destroyed a person’s life!

As you may have seen from above I have linked to a website for the source of the quoted material, I highly recommend anyone who may be a victim of Cyber Bullying or if they aren’t sure if a friend is in the situation of being bullied to visit the site Bullying UK, it has a lot of great advice and resources for victims and friends of victims.

Now I have to say that I was going to name and shame the said person that was being such a nasty piece of work to my friend, but I think it’s now down to the authorities to sort out the problem with them and it’s not my place to jeopardise any investigation in to said incident.

So have you been a victim of Cyber Bullying? How did you deal with it?
