Dragon Raiders Segway The Day Away [review]

Ever had one of those days where you friend says to you, how do you fancy doing a Segway adventure.

Well that’s exactly what I was asked a few weeks ago, when it was coming up to a friend’s birthday and some bright spark came up with the idea of jumping on a Segway and riding around the woods!

So on Saturday we started out over to Snowdonia to the Dragon Riders Activity Park to enjoy an hour racing around the woods on the Segway X2, which is fitted with chunky 4×4 style tyres allowing you to virtually travel over any terrain that you could imagine.

The Dragon Rider Activity Park has 30 acres of land for all their activities, that’s not just for the Segway, they also offer a “Bear Grylls” survival academy, you can find out more about that on their website, but for us, it had to be the Segway.

There are four Segway Adventures treks which are suitable for anyone over the age of 10. The treks are:

Junior Rally Trek – £15 per rider, 30 minutes long (for 10 to 15 year olds)
Family Trek – £25 per person, 45 minutes long (suitable for all ages 10 years old and above)
Adult Rally Trek – £25 per person, 45 minutes long (suitable for ages 16 years old and above)
Senior Trek – £25 per person, 45 minutes long (suitable for ages 55 years old and above)

We opted for the “Adult Family Trek” which was at first sounds very daunting and when you arrive and see where you will be riding your Segway, you think to yourself, “good grief, what have I let myself in for!”.

Upon arrival and signing a disclaimer about hurting yourself, you fall off it’s your fault, you are taken to be kitted out with a jump suit, helmet and your Segway, then it’s time to be shown how to control the movements of going forward, turning around and how to dismount your Segway.

Now we went in a party of five, so we were taken one by one and shown how to use the Segway, then placed in to a riding circle to just get used to how to use it, once all of us were gliding around the cones, it was a game of stop and go, the music stopped and we had to stop quickly and safely.

Lead The Segway To The Woods

Once on the woods, the adventure really begins, with driving in and out of the woods, between the trees and the rough terrain, watching out for those tree roots that can be quite lethal to the two-wheeled machine, you have to remember that you have that extra width either side when going through gaps.

Boy oh boy is it fun riding around the course and the Segway is easier to ride than you would think, the activities are fun as well, you don’t just ride around the woods, you do speed and agility trials, some easy and some demanding, such as doing a slalom as fast as you can.

Although you only have around 45 minutes going around and having so much fun, it’s a great way to do something different, after we had finished we sat in the opening by the entrance, that has a big log fire burning to keep you warm, saying to each other, “I so have to get one of these.” Yes they are that much fun.

I have to say that the staff at Dragon Riders are fantastic, they explain everything in a fun a simple way for you to understand and if you do happen to have a little mishap they are great, yes I did come off doing the slalom!

The Segways are brilliant and the place itself is also a place that you feel so at ease at while you are there, it has an atmosphere of fun and excitement and everybody there had a smile on their face, even those that were running back to base after being on the Bear Grylls Survival, heck they even do paintball there, not for me, done that before!
