Kinky Boots Thrills Audiences with a Standing Ovation at Venue Cymru

I remember seeing the movie, Kinky Boots, many years ago and it was a movie that grabbed the imagination, now Kinky Boots comes to Venue Cymru in Llandudno and it’s no surprise that the stage musical has audienecs taking to their feet for a standing ovation.

Kinky Boots takes you from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Charlie Price is struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family business of Price & Son. With the factory’s future hanging in the balance, help arrives in the unlikely but spectacular form of Lola, a fabulous performer in need of some sturdy new stilettos.

I have to say that I’ve been seeing a lot of films that I enjoy coming to the theatre in musical form and Kinky Boots is another that had me smiling from ear to ear as soon as it started, this is a show that is so much fun to watch that you’ll want to go back and see it again.

The cast of Kinky Boots the Musical are superb, all the cast bring the story to life in a colourful and vibrant way that is just a sheer delight to watch, Joel Harper-Jackson has such a passion in the role of Charlie Price, son of the show factory owner, who really doesn’t have a clue or interest in his fathers business.

But it’s not until a brief encounter with drag queen, Lola (Kayi Ushe) that things start to take a turn and he soon starts to work with Lola to produce those “Kinky Boots”.

I have to say that Kayi Ushe really steals the show as Lola and is not only flamboyant, but is also so much fun to watch with the quick one-liners and absolutely stunning musical performances that had the audience eating out of his hand as he struts his stuff across the stage during the show.

And let’s not forget Lola’s “Angels”, the entourage of drag-queens that support Lola through many of the musical numbers throughout the show, they were brilliant.

With direction and choreography by two-time Tony® Award-winner Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde, Hairspray), Kinky Boots is the winner of every major Best Musical award including three Olivier Awards, three WhatsOnStage Awards as well as six Broadway Tony® Awards and it shows in the performances why Kink Boots has been so successful.

The set design looks brilliant, with many of the locations that the musical takes place in, seamlessly moving from one to another to take us from Nottingham to London and even to Milan, lighting is also a key to the show and the lighting team have done a fantastic job producing wonderful lighting that works like a charm, including a stunning solo piece as Lolo sings a wonderful song towards the end, you’ll have to go see the show for that one.

One of the many things that appealed to me with Kinky Boots the Musical is that the music and lyrics are by non other that the very talented Cyndi Lauper, her work in Kinky Boots certainly shines like the Red Boots that Lola wants, Lauper has produced musical pieces that will have you tapping your feet, clapping your hands in many cases, wanting to sing along with the cast.

“It has been a wonderful adventure and a privilege for me, to play a part in creating Kinky Boots. Everyone can relate to this universal story, and I am overwhelmed that people in the UK have embraced it with open arms. I am thrilled that this fabulous show will be touring the country!”

Composer and Lyricist, Cyndi Lauper

All the performances in Kinky Boots the Musical are flawless, this is a show that you really need to see while it is on at Venue Cymru, it’s a night of entertainment that you really don’t want to miss.

There are far too many cast in Kinky Boots the Musical to mention and I would love to give them all the credit they deserve, but I have to say that all the cast work together with so much passion and they have all brought a big smile to a theatre full of people and the audience showed their appreciate with a standing ovation for the superb show.

My recommendation is to go see Kinky Boots the Musical at Venue Cymru, the show is on until the 16th February 2019 and tickets are on-sale now and available from www.venuecymru.co.uk / 01492 872000.
