Last night’s Cineworld Unlimited Screening was a little different than my usual movies with the rom-com Marry Me starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson.
Pop superstar Kat Valdez (Lopez) is about to get married before an audience of her loyal fans. However, seconds before the ceremony, she learns about her fiance’s cheating ways and has a meltdown on stage. In a moment of inspired insanity, Kat locks eyes with a total stranger (Wilson) in the crowd and marries him on the spot. As forces conspire to separate the unlikely newlyweds, they must soon decide if two people from such different worlds can find true love together.
So as I mentioned this isn’t the usual type of movie that I would normally go to see, but thanks to the Cineworld Unlimited Card we were treated to the movie a day early to its release, so as it was a chance for an evening out, I decided to pop along and check out Marry Me.
I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the movie, it is a charming and enjoyable movie that has a great cast to bring the story, which bizarrely is based on a graphic novel by Bobby Crosby and Remy “Eisu” Mokhtar, to life.
Jennifer Lopez is the perfect choice for the role of Kat Valdez, bringing her vocal skills to the musical pieces throughout Marry Me and let’s face it over the years she has certainly shown that she is so much more than just a singer with many film and TV roles over the years.
Owen Wilson is charming as Charlie Gilbert, the character that is brought to the stage to marry Valdez after her pop star fiance Bastian is caught cheating on her. Wilson brings the chalk and cheese element to the story and is a joy to watch as he slowly changes his thoughts on the “marriage” between himself and Lopez’s character.
There are plenty of laughs to go around as well, but that’s what you would expect from a fun rom-com, it’s lovely to hear people joining in with the laughs during a screening as the cinema and Marry Me certainly had people laughing together at our screening and it was a mixed bag with the age groups as well.
There are some great moments from Sarah Silverman (Don’t Look Up, Wreck-It Ralf) with some lovely comedic time and from John Bradley who we recently saw trying to save the world in Moonfall, Bradley plays the role of Collin Calloway who is Kat’s manager.
Chole Colman (Gunpowder Milkshake, My Spy) is wonderful as Lou Gilbert, Charlie daughter, she certainly steals the scenes she is in and her character is one that seems to be Charlie’s conscience when it comes to making the right decisions.
Marry Me is a film that had me laughing out loud and I thoroughly enjoyed all the performances from the cast, it’s not going to be everyone’s taste, but hey if I can enjoy a light-hearted rom-com then maybe you should give it a go.
Marry Me is in UK cinemas from the 11th of February.
