It’s the night we have been waiting for the Oscars 2022 and there were some amazing movies up for the Oscars, so it was a tough one this year to pick out our predictions for the winners in each category in the 94th annual Academy Awards.
This year sees The Power of the Dog with 12 nominations, including best picture, best director for Jane Campion, and acting nominations for star Benedict Cumberbatch and supporting players Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
One of my favourite Sci-Fi films last year was Dune and it is up for 10 nominations, including best picture, but the film was left out of the directing and acting categories.
Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and Kenneth Branagh’s wonderful Belfast earned seven nominations, while King Richard was nominated in six categories. The three movies competed for best picture in a category that included a total of 10 nominees; CODA, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Licorice Pizza and Nightmare Alley rounded out the list.
What a night for the movies with Dune taking home well-deserved awards and for the moment that Chris Rock’s wisecracks went a little too far as Will Smith took to the stage and slapped Rock after making a joke about Smith’s wife Jada, returning to his seat Smith shouted at Rock, “KEEP MY WIFE’S NAME OUT OF YOUR F*****G MOUTH!”.
Later Will Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor and gave an emotional speech about family and also gave an apology to The Academy and the other nominees.
The night also saw a standing ovation for Al Pacino, Rober DeNiro and Francis Ford Coppola in celebration of the 50th anniversary of The Godfather.
Fan Favourite Movie of the Year went to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead.
