Robin Hood 2022 panto at Theatr Colwyn – Review

Now many of you that read the articles here on Blazing Minds will know that this time of year I always head out to a couple of pantomimes to enjoy the festive season with plenty of laughs, my second panto visit was over at Theatr Colwyn in Colwyn Bay for the Magic Light Productions version of Robin Hood.

This year’s pantomime saw Libby Loughland as The Sheriff of Nottingham, Stuart Loughland as Molly Maypole, Lukas Kirkby as Johnny Bach, Steve Bloor as Robin Hood and Erin Dolan as Maid Marian.

Many of us all know the story of Robin Hood as he stole from the rich to give to the poor, but Magic Light Productions‘ wonderful and very funny take on the story in the form of a pantomime is another show that had everyone in the theatre laughing loudly and the children (and adults) booing the evil Sheriff of Nottingham.

As with previous years, the pantomime production is one that still has that real family feeling, the small theatre takes you back to the days when I used to go to the theatre with my parents for Panto, and the show itself is one that gives you that nostalgic feeling of a good, dare I say it, old fashioned style pantomime with wonderful silly moments that kids laugh out loud to and some risque double entendres that the adults know they shouldn’t really laugh so hard at without, but just can’t help it.

Robin Hood - Theatr Colwyn - QUAD

Robin Hood at Theatr Colwyn takes us on a journey through Sherwood Forest and the town of Nottingham via our seats in the theatre. It’s always a joy to spend a couple of hours at the theatre watching the pantomime and I had been looking forward to this year’s show, especially after I sadly missed last year’s show.

I have to say I wasn’t disappointed, the cast of the show has yet again shown that s small cast and production team can put on a wonderful and magical evening for all ages. Packed with plenty of jokes, music, lovely-looking sets and costumes that really have that Panto look. I always love to see Stuart Loughland as the panto dame and how he changes his costumes so quickly playing the Molly Maypole I’ll never know, but those costumes are so bright, and cheerful and certainly have the panto look.

I loved Libby Loughland as the Sheriff of Nottingham, she always plays a great villain and the kids love to boo her character. Steve Bloor was also fun to watch as Robin Hood and had the kids shouting “Hi ya Robin” when he came onto the stage and shouted, “Hi ya kids“.

Lukas Kirkby always tickles my funny bone and this year was no exception with his comic timing with Steve and the rest of the cast.

This year saw Erin Dolan take to the stage as Maid Marian and she was also a joy to watch, I loved the musical numbers that she sang during the show.

Last but, no means least, the dancers from the Pearl Shaw School of Performing Arts were great to watch during their dance sequences.

When you go to see a Magic Light Productions’ pantomime it’s not just the panto you are going to see, they put on something very special every year at the start of the second half of the show and this year they treated us all to another magical sequence of puppetry that is all done with puppets that are lit with fluorescent colours that not only look great, but they bring you a magical side of the show that the small children are fascinated by as the puppets float around the stage and dance to the music.

Robin Hood at Theatr Colwyn has been another pantomime from Magic Light Productions that has been an absolute joy to watch, my chuckle muscles certainly had a good workout during the show. The show is certainly popular with the first few shows sold out, so I would recommend booking your seats as soon as you can, you don;t want to miss this one.
