I used to love the original TV show back in the 80s The Fall Guy with Lee Majors in the titular role, now we have a new movie starring Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Winston Duke, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Waddingham and Stephanie Hsu which is based on the TV series.
Colt Seavers, played by Ryan Gosling, is a stuntman who, like his colleagues in the stunt community, endures explosions, gunshots, crashes, and falls from great heights to entertain us. After a nearly career-ending accident, Colt must find a missing movie star, unravel a conspiracy, and win back the love of his life, all while continuing his day job. What could go right?
David Leitch, a real-life stuntman and director known for blockbuster hits such as “Bullet Train,” “Deadpool 2,” “Atomic Blonde,” and “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” has released his most personal film yet. Titled “The Fall Guy,” this apex-action thriller and love letter to action movies is a hilarious and hard-driving film that pays tribute to the under-appreciated crew of people who work tirelessly to make these movies possible.
Oscar® nominee Ryan Gosling (Barbie, La La Land, Drive) stars as Colt Seavers, a battle-scarred stuntman who, having left the business a year earlier to focus on both his physical and mental health, is drafted back into service when the star of a mega-budget studio movie—being directed by his ex, Jody Moreno, played by Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place films, Sicario)—goes missing.
While the film’s ruthless producer (Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham; Ted Lasso), maneuvers to keep the disappearance of star Tom Ryder (Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson; Bullet Train) a secret from the studio and the media, Colt performs the film’s most outrageous stunts while trying (with limited success) to charm his way back into Jody’s good graces. But as the mystery around the missing star deepens, Colt will find himself ensnared in a sinister, criminal plot that will push him to the edge of a fall more dangerous than any stunt.
Being a fan of the original TV series I did have my doubts about another movie that was based on a classic show, but they were soon put to one side when the film started, this is a film that has a bit of everything for everyone from its death-defying stunts to the cat and mouse romance of the Colt (Gosling) and Jody (Blunt).
The Fall Guy is what you would expect from the title, we are brought a story that moves along nicely as we are taken on a journey inside and outside of the film industry of the unknown heroes of the stunt world via Colt, but there is more to the film as there is a twist to the tale as Colt is taken deeper into what has happened to the star of the movie that he has been brought onto to.
As I mentioned earlier there is plenty for everyone in The Fall Guy, the stunts are good and look amazing on the big screen, and the romance between the lead characters works so well with twists of comedy to lighten everything up.
The 2h+ run time certainly didn’t seem that long and I have to say that I enjoyed every minute of it, there are also plenty of Easter Eggs throughout The Fall Guy for you to pick up on, I’m not going to go into too much detail about them, but there are visual and audio Easter Eggs for you to find, but one that stood out to me more than the others was a sound effect for The Six Million Dollar Man that the original Colt (Lee Majors) starred it. There are plenty more to spot with one that is so HUGE that you can’t miss it.
Does the Fall Guy Have a Post-Credit Scene
The Fall Guy doesn’t have a post-credit Scene, but it does a mid-credit scene. After we are treated to some great outtakes and behind-the-scenes moments in a split-screen style with the credits, we are given a scene with a title card of “Previously on The Fall Guy“, a lovely throwback to the original TV series. I won’t go into this too much as spoilers, but it does feature some original TV show cast members that finish off this new version of the classic show nicely.
