Being a big fan of the franchise I popped over to Amazon.co.uk the other day and ordered my copy of Tremors: Shrieker Island, the seventh film is the cult movie franchise.
Many of you may have read my review of the Tremors Blu-ray Boxset that I had for my birthday last year, which at the time was classed as “The Complete Collection“, but we all knew that the seventh film was on its way when Michael Gross posted up a teaser image of himself on the set of Shrieker Island.
It’s been 30 years since we were introduced to the “Graboids” and Burt Gummer (Gross) and over the years the film has become the life story of Gummer more than a story of the fast-moving monstrous creatures, we even had a family tree movie with The Legend Begins in 2004 as we went back to the late 1800s to Perfection and met Gummer’s relative.
With Tremors: Shrieker Island Burt is now on a lovely looking island and has removed himself from society and technology, but nothing lasts forever and a group of wealthy trophy hunters genetically modify Graboid eggs to create the ultimate hunting experience, but it’s not going to go to plan for them and it’s not long until the Graboids escape their captivity and run amok on the island and the shriekers have developed further than the ones we have seen before in the previous films.
Now they can see their prey in almost Predator like sight and they are on the prowl to take out any living thing on the island! Enter our hero Burt Gummer, our introduction to him is much akin to a Robinson Crusoe looking character, but he reluctantly returns to kick some Graboid ass!
Being a fan of the Tremors franchise since that first film in 1990 I was excited to see how the new film took the franchise, over the last 30 years there have been some moments during the last six films with have been a little disappointing and although Tremors Shrieker Island certainly isn’t one of the best in the franchise it is still fun to watch.
It’s always great to see the continuing journey of Gummer’s rather unfortunate life with the Graboids and how he copes with fighting them off and this one is no exception, the Graboids have had some changes made to how they look, think of Alien when they are “birthed” from various species or in other locations, the Graboids looks great in the surroundings of the island.
The Shriekers in this new film also have some changes as well and they also work well in the new location, the special effects for both Shriekers and Graboids look good and with modern technology changing so much since Tremors (1990) the CGI effects work well alongside the physical effects.
When it comes to the cast for the film, we really can’t have a Tremors film without Michael Gross and his whimsical “Gummerisms”. Sadly this time we don’t get a return of his Burt’s son, but we do get to meet his son’s mother Jas who is played by Caroline Langrishe who many will recognise from the BBC TV series Lovejoy.
Burt is joined by Jimmy (Jon Heder, Napoleon Dynamite, Blades of Glory) for some deadpan comedic moments. Also along for the ride is Richard Brake (The Dare, Kingsman) who is great as the head honcho of the team hunting the genetically modified Graboids.
If like me, a fan of the Tremors franchise, then Tremors Shrieker Island is a movie that you will want to add to your collection the movies, it’s by no means the best, but it’s a comical ride of action and silliness.
