Has it really been 35 years since the release of Back to the Future! It sure has the film was released back in 1985 and has been one of those movies that have a massive following and is loved by fans all over the world, so I was very excited when Cineworld cinemas reopened here in Wales on Friday and that the first movie I would see would be Back to the Future.
I have to say that it was a bit of strange experience returning to the cinema after 149 days since the last visit before the Coronavirus Pandemic lockdown, with staggered showtimes and the reduction of footfall in the cinema it was strangely subdued, you have to enter Cineworld with your face covering on and head in one direction to the hand sanitising station before heading to the main area of the cinema.
The machines where you can get your tickets if you have prebooked etc are reduced down with one in between the other marked off as out of use, only one till was working as well to buy sweets and drink etc.
Everything is done with 2m social distancing and the staff are well aware of the rules and regulations, I have to say that they were fantastic at Cineworld in Broughton and were very helpful in explaining to visitors to the cinema the regulations before, during and after the movies.
In the screen for Back to the Future it was like seeing a movie late at night or at the end of its run, there really wasn’t thank many people in the screening, so social distancing really wasn’t an issue, face covering must be worn at all times, except when eating and drinking so it is a bit of a strange cinema going experience during a movie, especially when your glasses keep steaming up, but hey that’s a small price to pay to see a film back on the big screen and what a film to kick off with.
Back To The Future 35 Years Later
I’ve seen a lot of the releases over the years on the big screen, such as Gremlins which was affectionately converted into 4DX, but nothing has excited me so much as to relive 1985 and go back in time with Doc (Christopher Lloyd) and Marty (Michael J Fox) in their first time travelling escapade.
OK, I’ve seen the film over and over again at home on Blu-ray, but nothing can match the feeling you get from seeing it on the big screen, even the opening sequence with the clocks ticking from all around you in the cinema, being able to read the newspaper clippings on the walls and so much more detail that you don’t really pick up on at home.
So by now, you all know the story of Back to the Future if you don’t where the heck have you been! But it all comes down to Doc Brown inventing the time machine from a DeLorean, even Marty is shocked by that one, “Wait a minute, Doc. Ah… Are you telling me you built a time machine… out of a DeLorean?”, in a twist of fate Marty is sent back to 1955 where he has to find the Doc to get back to the future, but things go wrong when Marty changes the outcome of time by accidentally coming between his mother and fathers first meeting.
Marty and the Doc come up with a plan to get Marty’s parents together and to get back to 1985 and it’s all done brilliantly, so much so that Back to the Future Part 2 connects up and uses so much of the first movie to bring even more amazing time travelling shenanigans, but that’s a whole different story.
I have to say that Back to the Future looks and sounds great on the big screen and for me it still stands the test of time, it packed with comedy, brilliant writing, a fantastic soundtrack with Huey Lewis and the News, Lindsey Buckingham, Eric Clapton, The Outatime Orchestra and lots more which all adds to the 80s feel that the movie has.
For me it was like being a teenager again and stepping into the cinema back in 1985 to see the movie for the first time, I’ve seen Back to the Future Part 2 on the big screen again when we have the anniversary showing on the date that Marty went to the future (now that was weird), but I’ve not seen this one on the big screen since 1985 so what a ride.
It’s so strange that even watching a film lots of times at home would have such an emotional feeling when seeing on the big screen again, so I would like to say a massive thank to Cineworld in Broughton for a great start to returning to the cinema and for taking me back in time to 1985, all that leaves me to say is that if you get the chance to see Back to the Future on the big screen, go see it.
