Doctor Who hit the big screen at Vue Cinemas Rhyl and it hit it with a roar!
The last time that I saw the Doctor on the big screen was the 50th Anniversary episode and although “Deep Breath” wasn’t in 3D, it was still an exciting and interesting episode to say the least, starting with Strax introducing us to the Doctor’s past regenerations, with lots of humour thrown in to get us ready for what was about to come.
With Peter Capaldi taking control of the sonic screwdriver and the key to the TARDIS, we were taken to Victorian London, where we caught up with Madame Vastra and Jenny as a dinosaur stomped across the Thames before regurgitating the TARDIS on to the shoreline and the introduction to the new Doctor was complete.
Many things struck me with the series 8 opener, the credits for one, which are superb with the clock movements moving and ticking as the TARDIS travels through and the names displayed for the episode, although I’m not sure about the re-working of the title music, it seemed a little lack-lustre and didn’t have the punch that the earlier versions had.
The episode itself, titled Deep Breath, is brilliant though, with so many “Easter Eggs” for Whovians to enjoy, mentions of previous characters, objects and more from over the years of Doctor Who, none of which I am going to mention, if you are one of the few that have still not caught the episode and we don’t really want to spoil it for you. There a even several links to Sherlock!

So what about Capaldi as the Doctor, has he carried it off? Well, yes he has, he has brought his own style in to the Doctor, but still holding on to several of the previous Doctors, as soon as he came on to the screen he was building up to his Doctor and throughout the episode it was growing, until the last scene upon which I sat there and thought, “Oh yes, this is certainly the Doctor for me”.
Deep Breath is a fantastic episode and introduction to Capaldi, having Vastra (Neve McIntosh), Jenny (Catrin Stewart), Strax (Dan Starkey) and Clara (Jenna Coleman), although it did remind me in parts of the episode of the weeping angles, rather than not blinking, you “Don’t Breath”, butt what an episode it is.

There are two wonderful cameos in Deep Breath, one of which is a wonderful scene with Brian Miller, who a many will know has not only been in several productions of Doctor since 1983, but is the husband of the last Elizabeth Sladen, it was lovely to see him in the episode with the new Doctor. The other cameo is …… Well I’m not mentioning that one, see for yourselves.
At the end of the episode we were treated to a behind the scenes special and a live Q & A with Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Steven Moffat, a brilliant end to the night and maybe not as packed a cinema as it was for the 50th, but still an experience worth having.
What Next for Doctor Who?
Next is 11 more episodes in this 12 episode season, which look like they are going to be a brilliant start to Capaldi’s for season, which include parts played by Tom Riley, Ben Miller, Keeley Hawes, Frank Skinner and the return of Jemma Redgrave and Ingrid Oliver reprising their roles of Kate Stewart and Osgood.
So be prepared for action, adventure, scary monsters, Robin Hood, Daleks and a miniaturised Doctor!
