FrightFest Presents and starring David Arquette (Scream franchise) and from writer/director Brea Grant, 12 Hour Shift is a deliciously dark horror.
1999, in a small hospital in Arkansas. Junkie nurse Mandy (Angela Bettis, Bless The Child) makes extra money selling organs of dying patients whose demise she speeds along. But, when her cousin Regina (Chloe Farnworth) misplaces a kidney – which local gangster Nick (Mick Foley) was going to buy – Mandy finds herself having to acquire a fresh one during a 12-hour shift. Chaos descends when Regina insists on helping in lethal ways and a wounded murderer (Arquette) breaks loose.
The Furnace – Digital HD 25th January
The Furnace is a tense Western set in the 1890s gold rush of Western Australia starring David Wenham (The Lord of The Rings, 300), Jay Ryan (IT: Chapter 2), Mahesh Jadu (The Witcher) and Baykali Ganambarr (The Nightingale).
To escape a harsh existence and return home, a young Afghan cameleer partners with a mysterious bushman on the run with two 400oz Crown-marked gold bars. Together the unlikely pair must outwit a zealous police sergeant and his troopers in a race to reach a secret furnace where they can safely reset the bars to remove the mark of the Crown.
Persian Lessons – Digital 22nd January and DVD 8th February
Inspired by true events, Persian Lessons is a powerful and harrowing story of survival from director Vadim Perelman (House of Sand and Fog), that received a Special Gala screening at the Berlin Film Festival 2020.
Nazi-occupied France, 1942. Gilles (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, 120 BPM (Beats per Minute), The Intruder) is arrested by SS soldiers alongside fellow Jews and sent to a camp in Germany. He narrowly avoids sudden execution by swearing to the guards that he is not Jewish, but Persian. This lie temporarily saves him, but Gilles gets assigned a life-or-death mission: to teach Farsi to Head of Camp Koch (Lars Eidinger, Personal Shopper, High Life), who dreams of opening a restaurant in Iran once the war is over. Through an ingenious trick, Gilles manages to survive by inventing words of “Farsi” every day and teaching them to Koch. The particular relationship between the two men sparks the jealousy of other prisoners and SS guards towards Gilles. And while the suspicions of Koch grow every day, Gilles understands that he will not be able to keep his secret forever…
Anchored by two exceptional performances from its leads, Persian Lessons is a Holocaust survival tale offering a powerful testament on the need to preserve the names of the men, women and children who lost their lives in this dark period of human history.
