In the small seaside town of Mellow Coast, Emily (Hannah Paterson) is trying to discover what has happened to her father, but as she searches for answers her friends start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown killer.
I Scream on the Beach is a new 80’s style slasher horror from co-writer/directors Alexander Churchyard and Michael Holiday. During filming I got a chance to speak with some of the cast on set and in my latest interview I got an opportunity to actress Rosie Kingston a few questions about the film.
Q. We are obviously here for I Scream on the beach! can you tell me a little bit about what we can expect from the film?
It’s a horror that’s set in the 80’s so the filming style is really 80’s picturesque in terms of costume, make up; but also the way that they are filming it with the angles and the setting which is really good. It’s also got a massive comedy spin on it which is really effective. It’s the first thing I noticed when I got sent the script, the sly little bits of comedy really pull the story and gives each character their own essence.
Q. Can you tell me a little bit about your character in the film?
Claudine is a very confident girl, but with a lot of hidden insecurities that don’t necessarily come across in her lines, but I think it’s quite clear that she latches onto things that push her character forward. For instance, she is with the guy of the group who is loud, cocky and the most popular. She latched onto him because it makes her feel better about herself. I don’t think she is as sure of herself as she comes across, but she is definitely the most confident of the three girls and thinks that she knows best all of the time. She thinks that she is above everyone, but she’s really not.
Q. What has been one of your favourite moments so far during filming?
I really like my one to one scene with Emily, it’s really nice to play that relationship and get in touch with her sensitive side. I also love her relationship with Paula, she beats her down all of the time and when she tries to say something she is just like “Shut up Paula”. I really liked playing that, it was fun.
Q. Are there any elements of the character which resonate with your own personality?
Absolutely, I am definitely pulling on some of my own experiences. I’ve got quite a mixed friendship of boys and girls so in my own head I put different people that I am friends with in different roles of the characters in the film. So, I am reacting to them as I would to those sort of friends to make it more genuine. I am definitely pulling in to my own life and I feel that Claudine can resonate with my personality as well. I am a very confident person, but I am not very confident about myself… if that makes sense.
Q. With the character itself did you change it at all from how it was presented in the original script?
When I originally auditioned I didn’t know anything about the character or the script, I was just sent some sides. I didn’t ask anything about it, I just wanted to interpret the character on my own. When I got the entire script I felt that I made the connection really well. The only thing I felt that I have maybe taken on that wasn’t in the original script as much was the fact that she is a bit more lairier than maybe originally planned – but I think it really works and they are happy with the way I have gone with that.
Q. With the films 80’s style did you help to stylise your character?
Absolutely, we worked together on outfits, hairstyles and make up ideas, but a lot of my costumes were self-styled by myself because I love the 80’s fashion. When they said 80’s fashion I had an image of what I wanted to look like; we worked together with ideas that they brought forward and I brought to get this look for her. She is not the most bold out of the three because Paula is very bold with her look and wears a lot of animal print and stuff. Claudine does look the youngest in the way she dresses which makes her the most fashionable of the three…, in the era.
What do you think makes the film stand out in the horror genre compared to other horror films at the moment?
I think it stands out because it’s coming back around at the moment with the 80’s genre, if you look at Stranger Things which is a really big recently so I think that will get it a really big fan base.
The fact that it’s not your typical horror where you are constantly on the edge of your seat, you are up and down all the time. There is also this grip of who is the killer all the way through, it keeps you going until the end because it’s a bit of a murder mystery like Cluedo. There are all of these characters, but who is doing it? I think it’s going to be really good.
Do you have any projects which you are working on at the moment?
I am not working on anything at the moment, I have been auditioning for some new projects, but this is what I am working on.
If someone was looking to get into acting themselves what advice would you give them?
Confidence is key with acting. Be confident that the decisions you make in the moment are right and when a director is happy with what you have done make sure you keep it that way. Don’t try and change it every time because if a director is happy with it, that’s the way it should stay.
And always believe that you can, because anyone can do what they want to do if they try!
