With the last few years that had been rather strange for cinema visits, this year has been a bit of a slower starter for me but I thought I would share my Top 10 Movies of 2022 so far, which no doubt will be a little different from other people’s top 10 lists, but this is a list of the movies that I’ve enjoyed and have been cataloguing on my Letterboxd.
So let’s kick off with the list of Top 10 Movies of Movies 2022 So Far which has a great mix of movies that I have seen over at a couple of Cineworld venues, Llandudno and Broughton, thanks to my Cineworld Unlimited Card.
Everything Everywhere All The Time
After seeing Dr Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, I wasn’t prepared for the sheer craziness that Everything Everywhere All At Once would contain, but what a great movie and that’s why it’s currently my number one movie, Michelle Yeoh is brilliant in this bonkers movie, it’s certainly a Marmite movie and I love it.
Top Gun: Maverick
I remember going to the cinema back in 1986 to see the first Top Gun movie and loved it, the music, action and romance. It’s certainly been a long wait for the sequel, but 36 years later we finally got the sequel to the much-loved movie. Top Gun: Maverick is a movie that fans will love and I went to see it in IMAX, which was stunning and in 4DX which was a ride of a lifetime.
The Batman
The Batman was a movie that I had been waiting to see for a while, now I have to say that initially, I wasn’t sure about Robert Pattinson being Bruce Wayne/Batman but he carries off the role brilliantly, the movie is dark and foreboding and is more of a thriller and detective story than a superhero movie and this is what appealed to me so much. This is The Batman that I had been waiting for for years.
The Phantom of the Open
The Phantom of the Open was a movie that I wasn’t sure about the story, I had no idea about Maurice Flitcroft (played by Mark Rylance), but after seeing this wonderfully made and written British comedy has some great actors that bring the story to life on the big screen of Flitcroft’s dreams of playing at the Open, it’s not only funny it also touches on the heartstrings from time to time.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
This is one of those controversial movies that seems to be dividing fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for me, I really enjoyed the “madness” in the movie, the special effects in the IMAX Expanded Aspect Ratio were amazing, OK so it may not have one of the stronger storylines in the MCU, but Sam Raimi certainly brought his own twist to the MCU with this one and it was a fun trip to the cinema.
Elvis
When I found out that Baz Luhrman was involved with this new biopic of Elvis Presley I was intrigued, I’ve enjoyed all of Lurhman’s films so checking this one out on the big screen was a must. Austin Butler is certainly a scene-stealer as Elvis, you do believe after a while that you are watching the real Elvis on the cinema screen. Tom Hanks is superb as the Colonel and his screentime with Butler. Lurhman’s style of directing is a joy to watch and so is this movie.
The Electrical Life of Louis Wain
The second film in the top 10 movies of 2022 starring Benedict Cumberbatch, this time playing the part of Louis Wain, if the name sounds familiar, he was the man who brought us some of the world’s most famous paintings and drawings of cats.
The Electrical Life of Louis Wain is a charming and wonderful film to watch, shot with a 4:3 ratio it gives you that older movie feeling, it’s also a rather emotional movie as well, so make sure you have tissues at the ready.
Belfast
This was on the many Cineworld Secret Unlimited Screenings that are only available to Cineworld Unlimited Members, going into the cinema we had no idea what film we would be seeing which is all part of the excitement. It was a sheer delight when the film started, although one person did walk out complaining it was in Black and White (he should have waited as that was only the opening credits).
Belfast is a charming film from Kenneth Branagh, with a super cast including Jude Hill, Jamie Dornan, Lewis McAskie and Caitriona Balfe.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Thanks to Cineworld again for another chance to see a movie a little early, Unlimited members got the chance to preview Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal in the very funny The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Nicolas Cage plays a version of himself in the film as he stays with superfan Pedro Pascal, but not everything goes to plan in this comedy that is very much a film within a film with plenty of Nicolas Cage to go around to please any fan.
