Top 20 Movies of 2020 that had us intrigued, on a magical journey and blew our minds

Let’s face it it’s been a strange year for film and most of us have watched films at home rather than at the cinema, but as we are at the end of the year it’s time for my Top 20 Movies of 2020 list, these are the movies that I enjoyed the most through the year.

As I mentioned it has a been a year that we started well with some great cinema trips but then with the Coronavirus Pandemic we were ripped out of the cinemas and left to home viewing for a while.

And this list shows that by some of the entries and although we did return to the cinema, if not for a brief time, there are some releases that we watched via screeners or on the likes of Prime Video and Netflix.

20 – Concrete Plans

Some debts are paid in blood… A manor house in disrepair and a landowner with a fierce temper and cash flow problem meets his match when confronted with a bill he can’t pay. Time is running out and the builders living on his land want their pound of flesh. When it becomes clear there is no cash, a red mist descends, the class divide widens and a simple dispute turns into a shockingly horrific display of violence as events spiral out of control. 

19 – The Hunt

Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don’t know they’ve been chosen – for a very specific purpose.

This was a movie that I wasn’t sure about before seeing it and was presently surprised by it.

18 – Bombshell

Now I have to say that I wasn’t 100% sure of the story behind Bombshell that stars Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie and an unrecognisable John Lithgow, what I did vaguely know is that the movie is based on the rather powerful and controversial media empire Fox News and of the story of the woman that brought down the man that created the well-known empire.

This is a powerful movie that has had some controversy after its initial release, but I really enjoyed it.

17 – Extraction

An action packed movie that really never gives up on the action, it’s one heck of a fast paced movie that I enjoyed far more than I ever expected I would.

16 – Altered Carbon: Resleeved

Another release that I watched on Netflix during lockdown and being a fan of Anime and the first two season of Altered Carbon, this movie had me intrigued and excited to watch and it certainly didn’t let me down.

15 – The Gentlemen

This is another one of those movies that caught me by surprise, I loved the early work of Guy Richie and The Gentlemen certainly felt like his earlier work such as Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. This is a gritty and violent comedy of sorts.

14 – Bad Boys For Life

This was a movie that literally threw me out of my seat, Bad Boys For Life reunited Smith and Lawrence in the long-awaited sequel and damn did the 4DX make this movie one heck of an action movie experience.

13 – Mank

Another Netflix watch and one that I’d been looking forward to seeing for a while, I love Citizen Kane so I was intrigued about Mank and the story of how 1930s Hollywood was reevaluated through the eyes of scathing wit and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish “Citizen Kane.”

12 – Bill and Ted Face The Music

I remember seeing Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure back in the cinemas in 1989, it was a most excellent movie packed with time-travelling laughs and some brilliant music, now years after their Bogus Journey they are back to Face The Music and this time they bring their family with them.

11 – Hamilton

So many friends had told me how good Hamilton was and it was always getting rave reviews, so when the stage production came to Disney+ it was a chance to finally see it and I have to say I’m glad I watched it. Well worth checking out if you have Disney+ and you haven’t watched it already.
