Let’s face it, it’s been a fairly poo year for cinema trips, but I did manage to get some movies in during the bizarre lockdowns etc during the year, so here’s some of my best movies of 2020.
Now usually this time of year I’ve managed to have lots of trips to the cinema, but thanks to the Coronavirus Pandemic that caused the trips to the cinema to be on and off again. This top 20 list also features some of the older movies that had a re-release in UK cinemas when Cineworld re-opened after the first lockdown.

20 – The Invisible Man
So I have to say that this one has just slipped into my Top 20, It’s a movie that I wasn’t overly impressed with and it seemed to be one of those movies that really didn’t grab me and keep my attention, there were several times that I found myself yawning throughout the screening.
19 – Saint Maud
Now this one was a bit of a surprise for me, I wasn’t really sure how the film was going to play out when I saw it at the last Cineworld Unlimited Screening before the cinemas closed for the Lockdown and I did enjoy it. Saint Maud is a well-produced British made movie that had me intrigued from the start to finish.
18 – The Hunt
Another one of those films that was a surprise in 2020, twelve strangers find themselves in a clearing somewhere, they are gagged and left with a crate full of weapons, but who left them there and why! The Hunt was a movie that had plenty of action and mystery that kept it fresh throughout.
17 – Greed
Greed was in the list of Cineworld Unlimited Screenings of 2020, starring Steve Coogan as Sir Richard McCreadie, the film took us on a journey of the how a man could screw over people for money and become one the most powerful men in the textile world, but things don’t always last forever and “Rich McGreedy” would be taking a fall in a way even he wouldn’t be expecting.
16 – Bombshell
The early part of 2020 was great for the Unlimited Screenings and in January I got the chance to see Bombshell a week before its UK release, this was another one of those films that I probably wouldn’t have gone to see, but was pleasantly surprised by how it had me gripped with its true story of a group of women take on Fox News head Roger Ailes and the toxic atmosphere he presided over at the network.
15 – The Gentlemen
I have to say that my enjoyment of films by Guy Ritchie had been lacking over the years, love Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, but the likes of King Arthur just left me cold. So when I went to see The Gentlemen it was great to see Richie back on form with a great movie and a fantastic cast that didn’t pull back on the script.
14 – Bad Boys for Life
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence returned to the big screen in 2020 and they shook the cinemas, literally, Bad Boys For Life was released in cinemas and used 4DX technology to take us on a rollercoaster ride of a movie, it was the only 4DX screening that I attended that had me lifting out of the seat as the action through the audience around. The film was also fun to watch and it was great to see Smith and Lawrence back as those Bad Boys.
13 – Bill & Ted Face The Music
WOW after almost 30 years William “Bill” S. Preston Esq. and Theodore “Ted” Logan returned to the big screen in the very long awaiting Face The Music, nostalgia certainly kicked in for this one as Bill & Ted went on another comical adventure and this time they had their daughters involved with the shenanigans.
12 – Birds of Prey
This was a DC movie that certainly had some mixed feeling when it was released in the cinema, but I really enjoyed it. Birds of Prey was another of the movies that was released in 4DX and it worked great with the action sequences certainly taking us into the action via the 4DX experience.
11 – The Personal History of David Copperfield
I’d read David Copperfield many, many, years ago in school, but this wonderful version of the story was charming from start to finish, the selection of cast for the film was fantastic with performances from some the cream of British film and theatre. I’ve recently watched it again on Amazon Prime Video and it’s still a wonderful film to watch.
